On the eve of the FKF MozzartBet Cup final in Kwale, disaster almost struck for Tusker FC. Ian Simiyu, one of the team’s standout performers during the second half of the season, was struck by a serious illness that cast doubt over his availability for the club’s biggest match of the campaign.
But through round-the-clock care from Head of Medical Dr. Wycliffe Makanga, unwavering determination, and what many would describe as divine intervention, Simiyu defied the odds.
Summoning every ounce of strength, he took to the pitch despite his condition, delivering a match-winning performance with a brace as Tusker lifted the trophy. His heroic display also earned him the Most Valuable Player award.

“I was afraid I would not play in the final,” Simiyu says with both shock and excitement as he recounts the occurences of June 13.
“I was really unwell and I could not even eat. At some point I prayed and wondered, how I could work so hard yet not be there for what I had prayed for for so long. But I had faith and belief and I tried to push myself. I just ate fruits and built strength and energy to be ready for the final,” Simiyu adds.
The explosive strength, pace and power Simiyu showed to help the team clinch the trophy in Kwale were testament of the spirit he carried; a day earlier, too weak to leave bed, but on the day of the final, throw everything behind to sacrifice his all for the Cup.

“I am really delighted because I wanted this so bad. To win the Midfielder of the Tournament and the MVP were bonuses to an answered prayer. We really wanted this as a team and we managed to get it. Everyone in training was pushing hard and we kept each other on toes to make sure we were all aligned,” he adds.
Simiyu finished the season with nine goal involvements (eight goals and an assist) and he believes this is a foundation of a better 2026/27 campaign.
Here, he speaks to us fully on the season, challenges and the delight of finishing his first full season with a trophy in hand.
