Coach Maina rues late goal but lauds team effort in Homeboyz draw

Tusker FC assistant coach George Maina has rued a late goal that denied the team maximum points on the road, in a 1-1 draw with Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Oliver Majaka pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box to strike an 89th minute leveller, cancelling out Dennis Oalo’s goal early in the second half.

“It was really unfortunate to concede late in the game in a situation that we had worked really hard to avoid. I think we deserved more from this game looking at how we played. We executed our game plan really well and managed to contain most of the danger areas,” coach Maina said.

He added;

“However, there are so many positives to pick from and we are pleased with the effort the players gave today. We have picked seven points from three games in one week and lots of travel involved and that is a great effort from the team. You could see how we fought for every ball and how hungry everyone was to get a win today.

Oalo broke the deadlock just a few minutes after coming on for Erick Kapaito. Fabian Adikiny did well to win the ball on the press and put Oalo throygh, the forward striking from distance to catch the Homeboyz keeper off his line.

It was a great reward for the boys who had piled in lots of pressure especially in the last quarter of the opening half. Kapaito forced the keeper to a neat save from point blank while Dennis Iguta had a great chance with a header from few yards out off a Dennis Iguma cross but the effort rose over.

In the second half, keeper Brian Opondo was in brilliant form between the sticks, making several saves to deny Homeboyz in their moments of pressure.

Coach Maina now hopes the team can build on from the performance at Bukhungu, and take it on to the next game on Friday against Bidco United.
