Rotation but with an eye for balance: Coach Maina offers thoughts ahead of Gucha Cup game

Tusker FC’s assistant coach, George Maina, has confirmed that the technical bench plans to rotate the squad for Saturday’s Football Kenya Federation (FKF) MozzartBet Cup Round of 64 match against Gucha Youth, but with careful consideration to maintain the team’s balance.

Maina emphasized that the team is treating the match with the seriousness it deserves and will push for victory to progress to the next round.

“Rotation will be part of the plan, but we have to assess each player’s suitability for the game. We can’t afford to make drastic changes because we’re taking this match seriously. However, it’s also an opportunity to give some other players a chance to prove themselves,” said the coach.

In addition, Maina acknowledged the team’s recent struggles in front of goal, following three consecutive goalless draws in the Premier League. He assured that improvements have been made on the attacking front during training this week.

“While it’s concerning that we haven’t been scoring, the positive side is that our defense has been solid. But we need to return to our scoring form, and that’s been our focus in training this week,” Maina added.

Tusker FC reached the quarterfinals of last year’s FKF Cup, where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Kakamega Homeboyz, the same team that beat them by the same scoreline in the 2023 final.

This time around, Maina is determined to lead the team to a title victory, aiming for the club’s first FKF Cup win since 2016.

“Gucha Youth is a strong team, as our analysis shows. Teams from this region are always well-organized and full of talented young players. We’re ready for the challenge and focused on securing a win. Our ultimate goal is to reach the final this year,” said Maina.

The match will take place on Saturday afternoon at Gusii Stadium in Kisii.
