First half goals from John Njuguna and James Kibande saw Tusker FC pick a precious 2-0 win against Mathare United at the Sportpesa Arena in Murang’a on Saturday evening.
The goals could have been more on the balance of chances, but the boys will be delighted with the maximum harvest of points, a fourth win in succession.
The boys had a good start and should have gone ahead early on when Charles Momanyi’s looping header from a George Kaddu cross beat the keeper but was cleared off the line. Ryan Ogam also had a rasping shot from the edge of the box fly just inches over the bar.
The goal finally came in the 21st minute, Njuguna netting his first of the season.
It was more or less of a lucky dink, but he would take it. The midfielder picked Fabian Adikiny’s pass on the right and with the first take struck a cross into the box. However, the ball landed behind the keeper who had stepped a few metres off his line and into the net.
It should have been two with seven minutes left to the break when Njuguna placed a low cross into the box, but Ogam’s sleek touch inside the six yard box was just wide.
However, the second goal came just minutes to the break. Off some quickly executed play, Shaphan put Kibande through on goal, the winger darting off his marker before unleashing a brilliant low shot that beat the keeper.
In the second half, Mathare came back strong trying to get back into the game, but the backline did its job with precision.
There should have been more goals with Shaphan missing a sitter while Njuguna was denied his second by the post after beating the keeper.
The boys managed to guard the two goal advantage and the three points to move to second in the standings.
