Tusker FC sealed second spot in the FKF Premier League with a match to spare, after a well-worked 2-1 win over Posta Rangers at the Thika Sub County Stadium on Wednesday.
First half goals from James Kibande and Eric Kapaito gave the brewers a healthy lead, and despite Shami Mwinyi halving the deficit from the penalty spot in the second half, the boys held on for a win.
The victory, the fifth in six games, takes Tusker to 62 points on the log, six ahead of third-placed Police FC, with one round of the season remaining.
Posta had a better start to the game as they pressed high to try and capitalize for an early goal. However, they were caught out in the 12th minute when Kibande scored his fourth goal of the season, and the third in five matches with a clinical finish.
He was put through on goal by Kapaito, who had done well to hold on to the ball before slipping the ball between the two central defenders. Kibande made use of his pace to beat the keeper to the ball and clip over him.
The team was forced into a change just 23 minutes into the game, when David Odoyo limped off injured and was replaced by Fabian Adikiny. The lanky midfielder had a sight at goal on the half hour mark, but his effort flew inches over the bar.
The second goal finally came at the stroke of halftime, Kapaito earning his 12th of the campaign. It was almost similar fashion to the first. This time, it was Deogratious Ojok who slit the defense with a beautiful pass, Kapaito running to it and slipping it beyond the keeper.
In the second half, Posta came back strong seeking a way back. They almost had a goal but it took the niftiest of touches from Brian Bwire to push Shami’s shot against the bar.
They however found one back in the 67th minute, Shami scoring from the penalty spot after Patrick Otieno had been appended inside the box.
